This shirt’s sleeves aren’t the only thing fluttering about these days. Recently, I have been jumping into a ball pit of stress. With looming uncertainties about my career, finances, and personal success consuming almost every thought, I find myself overthinking the small stuff as well. The thing is, with a series of lows, eventually, comes a boatload of highs. How to stay afloat during those lows, you ask? Read on for a few tips that keep me sane during my daily grind:
- Asking for advice — I am a firm believer in confiding in loved ones and asking for help. A few additional perspectives are necessary to help you see things from a different point-of-view. Seek counsel from your parents, your boyfriend, your therapist…anyone who can bring you back down to Earth.
- Not thinking — Well, obviously, thinking is unavoidable. What I mean is, place your nervous energy into something fun and enjoyable. If your stress is plaguing you during the week, make a point of distracting yourself on the weekends with a night out, a good read, or a mini vacation. Stay busy and occupied so that when reality strikes again, you can return to it with a fresh pair of eyes.
- Taking up a hobby — Having a side hustle or passion can help keep those positive juices flowing and act as a purposeful diversion when the going gets tough. It is one of the many reasons why I love to write.
- Meditation — I tried and epically failed to get into a habit of meditating. However, I do play guided sleep meditations or spa music before bed most nights, and I notice that I drift off to sleep a lot quicker, and I wake up feeling more mentally rejuvenated.
It’s a whole lot easier to let the bad overshadow the good, especially when it FEELS like there is so much going wrong in your life; but with a little willpower, determination, and the aforementioned tips, you’ll forget why you were even so stressed in the first place. 🙂
