At just 21, Ashley Charleson is already wearing many hats (pun 100% intended). She recently graduated in May from the University of Delaware, having double majored in communications and psychology. Now, she is hustling and bustling her butt in New York City working in public relations, while simultaneously managing her flourishing side gigs as a photography extraordinaire and trailblazing entrepreneur for her new hat line, ABCaps.
With that, I’m so stoked to introduce you to my dear friend and all-around #girlboss as she discusses her exciting new business venture and undying love of fashion!
What inspired you to launch ABCaps?
I’m a big fan of baseball caps. They are always such a good go-to for a good/bad hair day, but I found that all my caps were making my day-to-day looks almost appear sloppy. I wanted to make caps that were different, that enhanced and even complemented outfits, so I came up with ABCaps!
What is the story behind the name “ABCaps”?
My initials are actually ABC (Ashley Brooke Charleson)! I wanted to incorporate them, and “caps” fit perfectly. Thanks, Mom and Dad!
Are you planning on expanding your line beyond baseball caps? Maybe T-Shirts?
I’m definitely still figuring out what direction I want the brand to go in, but nothing is out of the question!
Of all the hats you’ve designed so far, which is your favorite and why?
Ah, so hard to pick! I love them all. Rainbow may be my favorite just because I love the way the color pops, and you can never go wrong with black.
How would you describe your personal style?
I would say my style changes a lot depending on the day, but I love to follow what’s currently trendy and try to make it my own.
What are four closet staples you can’t live without?
I can’t live without athleisure, flatforms, bodysuits and oversized sweaters.
What advice would you offer to other girls who are considering starting their own businesses?
Do it!! Haha, but seriously. I had the idea and ran with it, and nothing feels better than creating something you feel passionate about. Go in with a plan, be flexible to change it, and ask a million questions. It’s a learning curve, but that’s part of the fun.
