In the latest edition of “Style Gone Rogue,” I bring to you a street style look that combines two of my favorite trends from the ’90s: fishnets and platforms.
Fishnets are the rad and rebellious younger sister of the more conservative, opaque tights, which partly explains why I (and many others) adore them so much. The trend has remained largely buoyant since its revival last year, and for good reason. Fishnets bring a side of edge to the party when our looks could use a little something extra. You can style them underneath your distressed denim as a texture booster, or even pair the sock version with your favorite shoes so your ankles can feel happily relevant and ~cool~. However you choose to style them, fishnets will always have a necessary place in your hosiery collection.
Platforms are another of the ’90s statement-making, fashion staples. Give a gal a chunky, elevated heel, and she’ll feel empowered to take on anything. I bought my pair from Poshmark, and it’s one of few purchases I can say I’ve never regretted. They elongate the legs and hold a special retro appeal that I will continue to embrace long after it won’t be socially acceptable for me to wear them anymore. Let’s keep that morbid thought at bay, though, shall we?
In styling both, I went for my Mango zip-up turtleneck and high-waisted, rolled-hem shorts from Zara. I got the shorts for $10 during one of Zara’s big sales, but it was the royal blue color of the denim that truly did me in over the price.
Remember, when it comes to style, it can be fun to play with bold and unconventional trends. More importantly, take trends and make them your own. Don’t let anyone stifle your creativity and desire to wear what makes YOU proud and happy.
